The Green-Fingered Witch

On the first night at Witch School, at quarter to eight,
The new class was ready – but one witch was late.
She tried to squeeze onto the rest of the line.
Ms Birch shook her head; this was not a good sign.
Cress tries to fit in with her classmates, but she can’t fly a broomstick, make a potion or turn invisible. In fact, the only witchy thing about her is her green fingers! But when disaster strikes at the Witch School Halloween party, can Cress use her own special magic to help?
The Green-Fingered Witch is written by Helen Docherty and illustrated by Steven Lenton. It was PUMPlished by HarperCollins in the UK in August 2024.
There will be German, Italian and Spanish editions of The Green-Fingered Witch available in time for Halloween 2025! 🎃

Reviews:
“Cress is my new favourite witch! What a wonderful new book from the super talented duo of Helen Docherty and Steven Lenton. It’s so heartfelt and wise. The zingy illustrations are rich and detailed. And I applaud the message: ability comes in many forms, and sometimes it can take time to find our voice, and our place. Bravo, Cress! An inventive and warm-hearted spin on the witch school story. I loved it.”
– Craig Barr-Green, author of Gina Kaminski Saves the Wolf
“We love The Green-Fingered Witch, a fabulous rhyming picture book which is the perfect read for Halloween.
Helen Docherty’s easy to read rhyming text is complemented by Steven Lenton’s wonderfully atmospheric illustrations. Spooky blues and autumn browns perfectly reflect the Halloween season and they include so many humorous details.
The Green-Fingered Witch is a fabulous book to introduce children to the fun of gardening and is a fabulous autumn read. It can stimulate discussions about how we can’t always be good at everything but we all have our own unique gifts. It would also make a great stimulus for a Halloween display or a pumpkin craft session.”
– Catherine Friess, Storysnug
“The Green-Fingered Witch is just perfect – it’s a delightful rhyming story with fun illustrations about embracing your strengths, reminding us that everyone has a touch of magic within!”
– Beverley Humphrey, Literacy Consultant
“So cleverly written with a lovely message that we are all different and have unique talents, we just need to find our place in the world.”
